Survey on integrity.

15 Aug (The Star) -- DON'T be surprised if someone knocks on your door on Aug 27 to ask if you can spare 20 minutes to answer questions on integrity, Utusan Malaysia reported.

This door-to-door approach by the Malaysian Integrity Institute is to gauge how Malaysians rate themselves on matters pertaining to integrity. Institute president Datuk Dr Mohd Tap Salleh told the paper

the National Integrity Perception, which ends in October, was an important survey as it would show how much Target 2008 of the National Integrity Plan had been achieved.

The plan, started in 2004, targets to achieve five elements: effective reduction of corruption; increasing efficiency of the public delivery system; improving corporate governance and business ethics; strengthening the family institution; and improving the quality of life and the people's well-being.

Dr Mohd Tap said the study was expected to cover 20,000 respondents and he called on the public to give their cooperation in answering all questions.

“One of the questions will touch on the public's suggestion for improvement, as they may say that the public delivery system is not satisfactory due to delayed replies or slow service.

“We hope to submit the proposals to the Government,” he said, adding that the questions were prepared by the institute and various government agencies such as the Anti-Corruption Agency and police as well as academicians.

Dr Mohd Tap said the study would be able to show the people's perception of the country's corruption index.

> Harian Metro reported that a guard rescued an Indonesian maid who allegedly tried to jump off the 17th-floor of a condominium.

The guard and his colleague had earlier seen the maid, 21, standing outside a window.

The woman, who had bruises on her mouth, hands and legs, claimed that she had to escape abuse by her employer.

“She was very weak and claimed that her employer would abuse her over the slightest mistake she made,” said the guard, who wanted to remain anonymous.

He said the maid also told him that her employer had installed closed-circuit TV cameras in the condo to watch her and threatened to report to the police each time she made a mistake.

A police report was lodged after the incident and the maid was taken to hospital for a check-up.

The maid's employer was away during the incident.
