JPJ upgrading computer system for better service
Monday, 11 June 2007
BUTTERWORTH, 11 June (The Star) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is investing RM400mil to revamp the computer system at all its 70 offices nationwide to better serve the public. With the upgrade, frequent service disruption at post offices and police stations due to "offline" connection with the JPJ will be a thing of the past.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the state-of-the-art computer network system would be installed by the end of this year and be operational by late 2008 or early 2009.

"The existing computer system, installed in 1991, has reached its maximum capacity. The new system will speed up internal work as well as services to the public at all JPJ offices, post offices and police stations," he added.

Once operational, motorists renewing their driving licences, road tax and motor insurance at post offices would no longer encounter service disruptions.

Those performing JPJ transactions with the police also need not worry about unnecessary delays caused by computer connection breakdown.

Chan said that apart from enhancing JPJ's existing online services such as e-Daftar for the registration of motor vehicles and e-Insurans for the payment of insurance premiums, the new network would also cater for its future e-services.

"This network can be used to facilitate our e-Pembayaran (e-Payment), which is now being partially implemented.

"So, you can expect payment via Internet, ATM, SMS as well as JPJ kiosks and portals after this network is installed," Chan added.

He was speaking to newsmen after launching a new service for road tax payment via credit card, a collaboration between Maybank, Visa International and JPJ at the state JPJ headquarters here yesterday.

Earlier, he urged JPJ to incorporate the use of debit cards, prepaid cards and Touch-N' Go cards into its e-Payment system.

He also said the department should allow credit cards to be used for payment made at post offices and commercial banks.
