PUTRAJAYA, 22 June (The Star) -- Weather updates and flood information will be just an SMS (short messaging service) away once the content development for them is completed.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said the content development for the weather forecast was now in the tendering process.
"We are putting in place the content which will later be accessed by the telcos who can send it out via SMS.

"When this is completed, subscribers need only dial a number for the latest weather forecast, for a fee," he told reporters after launching a two-day seminar on socio-economic impact of extreme weather and climate change.

Kong said the electronic media such as RTM had already started providing daily weather forecasts through the Selamat Pagi Malaysia and Hello on 2 shows.

On accurate weather forecasts, Kong said it was not possible to pinpoint the exact location where floods would hit although the Meteorological Department could forecast thunderstorm at wider areas.
