MALACCA, 6 July (The Star) -- Government servants will not be given any special treatment if caught flouting the law on the roads, said Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement director Salim Parlan. He said JPJ did not practise double standard, adding that errant drivers, even if caught while driving a government vehicle, would be fined accordingly.

“If a government vehicle is driven errantly by someone and we find that there is nothing wrong with the car, then the driver will be issued a summons.

“The respective department they are attached to should not have to pay for the driver’s mistakes,” said Salim after a joint operation to screen vehicles and drivers at the Bemban rest area on Wednesday night.

A total of 194 officers from 19 government agencies took part in the four-hour operation that ended at midnight.

During the operation, seven illegal immigrants were detained while another 14 people were fined when the Department of Environment found their vehicles emitting too much black smoke.

JPJ fined a total of 19 people for various offences such as driving without licence and expired road tax and the police detained another 13 who tested positive for drugs in a urine test.

Thirteen express bus drivers were also stopped for offences such as driving in the wrong lane.

Salim also said that JPJ, the police and other government agencies had been instructed to remove the special stickers from their vehicles so that they would not be given preferential treatment.

“When one of these cars with special stickers are stopped, instead of letting them through, we will check them in even more detail to verify their identity,” he added.

On another matter, he reminded vehicle owners who wished to have tinted windows to first get approval from JPJ.
