SHAH ALAM, 18 July (The Star) -- Successful cities of the future must have physical infrastructure to cater to greater knowledge acquisition, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said city planners needed to plan for full broadband coverage along with cellular and wireless capabilities to facilitate the flow of information over and above the basic communication infrastructure.
He said policy-makers also had to formally incorporate knowledge acquisition and the learning culture in every area of policy planning and implementation and provide incentives to private companies that promote the learning culture.
This, he said, also meant encouraging the growth of learning centres like community libraries and research facilities for sections of society not privileged enough to have learning tools like the Internet at their disposal.
Najib was speaking at the International Symposium on KnowledgeCities dinner yesterday organised by the Arab Urban Development Institute and the Malaysian Institute of Planners.
Najib said Malaysia had placed knowledge as its top priority in economic and social development and this emphasis was evident in the Ninth Malaysia Plan. |
